Fly Fishing Committee:
Current Solutions for Challenging Fishing Situations

Pasadena Casting Club Clubhouse

Many of us have been fly fishing for years, but our techniques and tackle may be little changed. We may consider ourselves up-to-date with the addition of breathable waders and a ballistic nylon tackle pack, but the reality is we haven’t really improved our techniques since the light cahill was our go-to fly. This meeting is the solution to bring you current with the most effective techniques used by the top anglers among us.

The past two meetings of this style we’ve had have received uniformly positive feedback. The format of the evening is that one of the experts is given a topic to briefly discuss and share his views. The other speakers can then chime in, and questions flow organically from the audience. I will moderate to help guide the discussions and keep the questions on topic. While this definitely isn’t a night of beginning fly fishing instruction, even novices will learn something, while the rest of us will grow wise with new info. Audience members will be able to ask questions and also guide the discussion onto topics of interest.

Tom Ishkanian is no stranger to PCC members. Well loved by many, Tom has been a serious fly fisherman for over four decades, and his previous programs have been standing room only. Many of us know Tom as the founder and former manager of the fly fishing department at Sports Chalet, as well as perhaps the most modest master-angler there is. In recognition of his contributions and skills, Tom was awarded the coveted Ross Allen Merigold Complete Angler Award several years ago. Tom is also a life member of PCC. Get Tom talking about fly fishing and he gets twitchy and uppity just like a sinner at an old time tent revival meeting.

Bob Moore has qualifications similar to Tom Ishkanian. PCC life member, PCC Fly Tiers Hall of Fame, etc. Bob does an incredible variety of fishing, and seems to be able to catch fish anywhere he finds water, even when everyone else is getting skunked. I can recall Bob outfishing everyone on PCC outings, and that was thirty years ago. Unique to Bob is a dry sense of humor which defies description—so I won’t even try.

As a kid in Pasadena, Steve Posner started out fly fishing in local waters and fly tying professionally. Steve soon became a junior member of PCC, and his skills have grown exponentially over the intervening decades. Steve is a tenacious fly fisherman—he will stalk a specific fish until he hits upon the combination of fly, presentation, and rigging which works.

Join us next Thursday, September 13, 2012, at 7:30 p.m. at the Clubhouse. Bring any questions you might have, and be prepared to turbocharge your abilities. Consider bringing your fly rod and showing up early to get some casting practice in.
