I’m very happy to announce that Conway Bowman will be returning to our Club this month with an all-new program on local fly fishing for bass and carp. Conway’s presentation will take us through the basics of successfully targeting bass and carp on the fly and will show us the tackle, flies, and best locations and times to catch these fish.

One of my favorites, Conway is familiar to fly fishermen nationally, as the past or current TV host of Fly Fishing the World, Ford Outfitters Journal, Dollar Wise Fly, Primal Predator, and In Search of Fly Water, shows which have appeared on ESPN, ESPN2, the Outdoor Channel, VERSUS, and the Sportsman Channel. At his last PCC appearance, he successfully convinced some die-hard “trout only” members to try saltwater fly fishing. Whatever the topic, his live programs never fail to hold the audience’s interest.

Conway’s name is synonymous with fly fishing for shark, a segment of the sport he’s popularized with his San Diego-based Bowman Bluewater Guides and Outfitters. Until you watch a 100+ pound mako shark chase your delicately-presented ten-inch long red streamer to the side of the boat before smashing it, as I have, you won’t know what you’re missing. I have admired Conway for his trips’ non-negotiable catch-and-release only policy on shark, and his public focus on the conservation of shark as an apex predator. It doesn’t matter if your fish would be an IGFA record, they all go back in the water unharmed on his boats. Conway is the founder of the Isurus Foundation, which is dedicated to raising awareness and funding for research, tagging, and conservation of the shortfin mako shark off Southern California.

Conway has long explored the warm water species in the lakes, reservoirs, and ponds of Southern California, and found new challenges in carp and bass, referring to it as “the most underrated fly fishery…only a few steps out our back doors.” For those of you who don’t know, some of the top fly fishermen in the sport actually schedule long destination trips specifically to target carp, a species which can be as difficult to catch as bonefish. We have some great carp and bass fishing much closer than trout fishing, and the habitats are much less sensitive to the water shortages and temperatures we’re now facing with cold water fisheries.

Born in San Diego in 1966, Conway has been fly fishing since he was a kid, spending summers in Idaho stalking trout on Silver Creek, the Henry’s Fork, and other fabled trout waters. After graduating from San Diego State University, Conway went to work for the San Diego Water Department as a Watershed Manager. In addition to his very active fly fishing career, Conway also currently manages the San Pasqual Valley watershed for the San Diego Public Utilities Department.

Conway is not a speaker to miss, regardless of the topic Start out your 2014 fishing year with some excitement.
