Some of us may forget Oregon when it comes to top fly fishing destinations in the nation. Oregon is considerably closer than Montana, and has fish way bigger than you think. Conveniently, Oregon’s north-south Highway 97 is the yellow brick road when it comes to trout.

Highway 97 offers the scenic tail water of the Crooked River, thick with trout. The headwaters of the Upper Deschutes offers brook trout in beautiful surroundings. East Lake, Hosmer Lake, and other spectacular waters near Bend have legendary Callibaetis hatches. At the southern end of Highway 97, part of the Klamath Lake system, the Wood and Williamson Rivers have fat rainbow trout (speaking from personal experience on a float trip with Marlon), as well as the Klamath River Redband Trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss newberrii). Trout up to 20 pounds are caught in this area, so fat doesn’t begin to describe the fish.

Marlon Rampy has been guiding in southern Oregon since 1991. His guiding business, Wildwest Fly Fishing, has been a long-time donor to PCC’s fundraisers. He has done at least two programs in the past to PCC, and we’re having him back because of his popularity. Outside of his guiding and speaking skills, he is developing into one of the best photographers in the sport. Looking at his recent shots confirms this. Marlon's work can be found in Northwest Fly Fishing magazine, CATCH webzine, Flyfishing and Tying Journal and many Amato Publications. A day with Marlon is not only a fishing trip--he is a great wildlife guide, so birds and other critters you might not notice will be pointed out.

Marlon is also associated with the Lonesome Duck Ranch on the banks of the Williamson River. Within 45 minutes of Crater Lake National Park, the Lodge is also near a major flyway and the Klamath National Wildlife Preserve, where multitudes of birdlife are in abundant evidence..
