Trout in the Classroom presentation by Jennifer O’Brien of California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW).
Please come to learn more about this program and find out how you can help PCC support our local schools.

Trout in the Classroom is a conservation-oriented environmental education program for elementary, middle, and high school students. Through the school year, students raise trout from eggs to fry and then release them into approved cold water streams and lakes. This act of raising, monitoring, and caring for young trout fosters a conservation ethic within participating students and promotes an understanding of their shared water resources.

Trout in the Classroom (TIC) is an environmental education program in which students in grades k-12 . . .

  • raise trout from eggs to fry.
  • monitor tank water quality.
  • engage in stream habitat study.
  • learn to appreciate water resources.
  • begin to foster a conservation ethic.
  • grow to understand ecosystems.

Most programs end the year by releasing their trout in a state-approved stream near the school or within a nearby watershed.

While the immediate goal of Trout in the Classroom is to increase student knowledge of water quality and coldwater conservation, its long-term goal is to reconnect an increasingly urbanized population of youth to the system of streams, rivers, and watersheds that sustain them.

Volunteers are a crucial part of a successful Trout in the Classroom program, because they support the teachers. Trout in the Classroom gives members and other volunteers the opportunity to get involved with their local schools, while teaching kids about water quality, aquatic life, and other environmental issues.
