"The History, Fishing and Revitalization of the Los Angeles River"
by Jim Burns

Thurs., Sept. 13 at 7 p.m.

Jim
For September meeting, we have longtime journalist, experienced angler, and Los Angeles River guru Jim Burns. Join us as Jim lays down his knowledge on the history of the LA River and its legendary Southern California steelhead, current fishing opportunities, LA’s plan to revitalize its river and conservation efforts.

The Los Angeles River has fascinated longtime journalist Jim Burns for close to a decade, when he watched a Los Angeles Times video of a young man pulling a carp from its waters. Gripped by the notion of urban fly fishing, he learned how to fly fish the river and wrote a piece on how to do it for California Fly Fisher. That lead to the creation of www.lariverflyfishing.com, which has been online since Nov. 8, 2010, garnering close to 4,000 readers and 175,000 views. The blog is known for its witty considerations of all things “riverly,” a word coined by a city employee who loved our river.

He was a consultant for Friends of the L.A. River for the first river fishing tournament on a license-free day in September, 2014. The event lasted three years and turned dozens of high-octane anglers, families, kids and local residents on to the river. He was also involved in the second of FoLAR’s fish studies, this one focusing on the Long Beach area. Over the summer, he volunteered on Trout Unlimited’s Vamos a Pescar introduction to fishing program, which taught 120 new anglers how to fish the river.

A member of PCC in the 1990s, he has been the newsletter editor twice, once in the late 1990s and currently for the past two and a half years.

He is also on the Southern California Advisory Committee for CalTrout.
Non-members are welcome at this free event and no RSVP is required.
